Program Notes from Your Friendly Neighborhood Dramaturg

Welcome to Macbeth by The William Shakespeare, a tragedy like no other! In this tale we will be traversing different parts Scotland in the early 17th Century. The journey is treacherous and long so please turn off your cellphones, this Time-Machine doesn't like it when you're checking Facebook or Tik Tok.

This story is about a man, a man who becomes King and falls under the weight of his crown. Some say that the reason of his downfall was of his design and weakness, some say it was destiny, others say outside forces came and put a stop to what was meant for our hero, but for you the audience you will have to decide for yourself what was the true cause.

The language of Shakespeare can sometimes be intimidating, but fret not brave heroes, for I offer you some advice. Before the show begins I want you to remember that Shakespeare wrote for the ear. Everything is explained through the text and is fleshed out to the highest degree. When Shakespeare wrote these plays they were originally performed with minimal to no set, no lighting design, minimal costumes, and minimal props if any. For these reasons Shakespeare decides to give you everything you need to know about the setting, the time, the seasons, and even something as small as the phases of the moon in the text. He wrote it that way the actors told you everything you needed to know about the show while it happens simultaneously. Isn't Shakespeare amazing?!?!?! Leave it to Will am I right?

The production takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Scotland which changes a lot in the given circumstances, because not only is our hero trying to become the new king of the realm, but could the barren wasteland and destruction from doomsday the reason for his wanting to take the throne? I leave that for you to decide.
